Stars tab Hargraves for head
men's golf and assistant men's basketball position
RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Dominican University
Department of Athletics has announced that it has selected Sam
Hargraves to fill the position of Head Men's Golf Coach and
Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at the University. Hargraves will
be responsible for building the men's golf program, which Dominican
plans to add for the 2010-2011 academic year, from the ground up.
"We are really excited to add Sam to our staff," commented Mark
White, Associate Director of Athletics and Head Men's Basketball
Coach at Dominican. "He had both the men's golf and basketball
experience we were looking for in this position and his 11 years of
college coaching experience will help our department get to where we
feel it should be in both programs."
As White mentioned, Hargraves possesses 11 years of collegiate
coaching experience at both the NCAA Division II and Division III
levels, including a four-year stint as the Head Men's Golf Coach and
Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Hillsdale College (2000-2005), a
Division II institution located in Hillsdale, Mich. During that
stretch, Hargraves helped rebuild the college's men's golf team,
recruiting the first-ever NCAA Division II Regional Tournament
qualifying golfer to the program.
Most recently, Hargraves spent the 2008-2009 basketball season as
the top assistant with the Lawrence University men's basketball
program in Appleton, Wis. While there, Hargraves helped the Vikings
to their fifth Midwest Conference Championship and fifth bid to the
NCAA Division III National Tournament in six years. In the national
tournament, Lawrence lost to eventual national champion Washington
University (Mo.) 67-65 in the first round.
In addition to his coaching experience at Hillsdale and Lawrence,
Hargraves had stops at Alma College (1998-2000) and Northwood
University (2005-2007). His basketball coaching experience has
landed him positions under a number of well-respected college
coaches including Joel DePagter (Lawrence), John Tharp (Hillsdale),
Ed Douma (Hillsdale) and Bob Taylor (Northwood).
As a collegiate basketball player, Hargraves played three years at
Calvin College in Michigan, leading the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (MIAA) with 71 three-point field goals during
his senior season.
